Volunteer at Standhope

2026 Race Weekend: July 21-26, 2026

We’re always looking for passionate, reliable volunteers to help bring Standhope to life. Whether you’re a trail runner, a medic, an organizer, or someone who just loves being part of something bigger than yourself, there’s a place for you here. Our volunteers are the heart of this race — the ones who make each aid station feel like a lifeline, who ensure the trails are marked and safe, and who cheer runners on when they need it most. From pre-race logistics to post-race cleanup, there are countless ways to get involved. No matter your skillset or experience, if you’re ready to lend a hand (or two), we’d be honored to have you on the team.

What to Expect

  • A really good time! We put on Standhope so that everyone can experience the mountains, even our volunteers. We want everyone to enjoy their weekend and bring all the good vibes!
  • Volunteer shifts vary by role but typically run 6–12 hours; some overnight positions are available
  • This is a remote mountain environment — cell service is limited or nonexistent at most locations
  • You may be asked to stay past your scheduled shift if runner flow is heavier than expected; flexibility is appreciated
  • Race staff will brief your team lead before the event; your team lead will brief you on arrival
  • Before race weekend you will receive a detailed email with more specifics about your position you signed up for. This is for general knowledge.

What to Bring

  • Layers — Pioneer Mountain temperatures swing dramatically, especially overnight (think 30s at night, 80s+ midday in July)
  • Rain gear; afternoon thunderstorms are common
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries (required for anyone working overnight or at remote locations)
  • Your own food and water for your shift
  • Camp chair if you want one — comfort makes a long shift easier
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • Any personal medications you may need

What to Know

  • Check in with your team lead when you arrive — do not start work until you’ve been briefed
  • Do not leave your post until your replacement arrives or you’ve been released
  • The roads can be really rough on car tires, if you are driving, please make sure you have a spare and a way to change it.
  • Leave No Trace: pack out all trash, leave the site as you found it

Communication

  • Most volunteer locations have no cell service — bring a satellite communication device (such as a Garmin inReach) if you have one
  • Download road maps and or course maps before arriving to the mountains.

A Note on Runners

  • It’s a long day out there, give them your support and love!
  • Your job is to support, not advise on race strategy

Perks

  • Volunteer t-shirt (pick up at packet pickup or race HQ)
  • Our undying gratitude — volunteers make Standhope possible
  • Race entry discount for the following year
